This is one of several festive teas launched at Davids Tea in November 2017. Candy Cane Crush is a black tea blend that comes out each year during the pre-holiday season.
If you love candy canes and sweet teas, this blend is full of chunks of actual candy cane, plus tons of snowflake-shaped sprinkles and white chocolate chips – and it has a moderate kick of caffeine. Due to the creamy white chocolate, this tea has a mouthfeel that is richer than regular tea, which may appeal to coffee drinkers who like a more bodied hot beverage.
And if you are counting calories during the pre-Christmas season – or watching your sugar intake – this sweet black tea, despite being chock full of candy bits, contains only 5 calories per cup and 2 g of sugar. My guess is that these nutritional values are per 1 Perfect Teaspoon of loose tea (which is equal to 2.5 teaspoons).
This review was posted on Cyber Monday 2017, and unfortunately Candy Cane Crush is mostly sold out on the Canadian site. However, this black tea blend is still available on the USA Davids Tea website. If this product isn’t available on the website, check your local Davids Tea retail store.

HOW TO STEEP
For best results, Davids Tea recommends using 1-2 Perfect Spoonfuls per 475 mL of boiling water. A Perfect Spoonful is 2.5 mL (so, just shy of a tablespoon).
I found the best cup of Candy Cane Crush was by using 1 Perfect Spoonful of loose tea, and 240 ml (one cup) of boiling water. Be sure to use boiling water when you steep this tea as the candy cane pieces, white chocolate, and sprinkles of have a bit of difficulty melting. The solution I came up with was to dunk the bag periodically during the steeping process and also massage the bag with a spoon once it has steeped. Otherwise, you will have bits of white chocolate chips and snowflake-shaped sprinkles that don’t quite melt, and you’ll lose out on some of those flavors.
If you want to go one step further, I even wring out the tea bag into my cup. Since this blend is a mix of black tea and lots of candy bits, it’s almost like the thicker sugary stuff gets trapped inside the bag. Who wants to waste expensive tea and all that yummy peppermint?
For a really strong cup of Candy Cane Crush, steep 2 tablespoons of loose tea in 240 mL of boiling water. For best results, use two separate tea bags, and fill each with 1 tablespoon of tea. Steep for 7 minutes and continuously dunk the bags during the first 60 seconds to ensure all the candy bits melt as much as possible. The downside to using this method is that I found the tea had a bit of a papery taste from using two filters; also, although the peppermint flavor is twice as strong, so is the black tea, which I found cancelled out some of the peppermint taste.
Because of all the sugary ingredients – white chocolate chips, snowflake-shaped sprinkles, shards of candy cane – this tea is moderately sweet and creamy. It tastes as though it already has a splash of milk added due to the white chocolate chips. If you like peppermint and sweet black tea, you should try this one!
The peppermint flavor in Candy Cane Crush is quite noticeable, and leaves your mouth feeling nicely refreshed. I like this festive Davids Tea more than Santa’s Secret as it really has a nice wintery feel due to the peppermint flavor.
While this black tea blend is absolutely beautiful with its reds and whites – and would put anyone in the spirit of Christmas – it basically tastes like a cup of lightly-steeped Red Rose tea with a strong peppermint flavor. The texture is creamier, and I think this could even appeal to people who are die-hard coffee drinkers as it has the body of a light coffee.
That’s not to say this tea is boring – it has an extra kick of peppermint that some minty teas lack, and the black tea taste doesn’t overwhelm the mint. It is more of a desert tea for sure, though it still only has 5 calories per cup – though it tastes much sweeter. While I’m very critical of tea, and find many of them lacking in flavor, this Candy Cane Crush is a tea that I’d purchase again.
